Grass cutting in Northamptonshire

With spring just around the corner, our green spaces are becoming hives of activity once again. Whether you have a small or larger space to beautify and bring back to life, the lawn is certain to play a starring role in your garden’s overall aesthetic. In this blog post, we share our top grass cutting tips so you can hit the ground running once the weather warms.

Time your first cut just right

Spring signals the start of many garden maintenance musts, including cutting your lawn. The timing of that first cut is more important than you think, but, as every gardener agrees, one time certainly doesn’t suit all.

Many gardeners advise waiting until at least March before cutting the lawn, with some even recommending delaying your first cut to April to ensure the damaging last frosts have been and gone. Getting the timing just right depends on your location and the weather conditions. I have been know to cut the grass in January owing to the right ground conditions and the fact the grass was already growing.  As long as the cut is during a mild enough period, the ground is not boggy and without the risk of an imminent frost.

Cut your grass little and often

The key to great looking grass? Mowing your lawns as regularly as possible. By increasing the frequency of your cuts, you’ll be rewarded with a thicker, lusher appearance, and it’ll be the envy of your neighbours! You should also opt for a trim rather than a full cut to encourage growth.

Unlock the secret to professional stripes

A striped finish is the epitome of a professional looking lawn, and it’s easy to achieve straight stripes with the right knowledge. Simply start by cutting a straight line down the middle before working your way out on either side. Stripes or not, each pass should overlap slightly - this is especially important if your mower has four wheels.

Leave the outer edges of your lawn until last and finish with a professional frame by cutting continually around the perimeter.

Adapt your mowing style to the terrain

Not every lawn can benefit from flat and sunny conditions. Overcoming lawn challenges however is as simple as changing your mowing style.

If your grass is damp or long, slow and steady wins the race, while an increased mowing height is ideal for cutting back mossy or weedy sections of the lawn. If part of your lawn sits on a slope or in the shade, mow on a slightly higher setting than the rest of your lawn. If your lawn looks shiny or frayed after cutting, it could be time to sharpen the blade on your mower.
